Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. In some cases the sound may be soft, but in other cases, it can be loud and unpleasant. Snoring during sleep may be a sign, or first alarm, of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Can obstructive sleep apnea be cured by operation?If so is the operation an easy process or is it complicated?

Surgery is normally a last option. CPAP is the primary treatment. There are some types of OSA that need surgery but by far most don’t. There are many types of OSA that surgery won’t help and I personally know two people who got the surgery (one twice) and it hasn’t helped, they are both still on CPAP and have decided it’s not so bad afterall. There can be serious complications from throat surgery and virtually no risks with CPAP. I know one who got the surgery and it worked for but he said that the recovery was very unpleseant. I think biblical terms came to mind.
Using a CPAP can take some getting used to but is woth it. I took to it right away because I loved the newfound energy and alertness I received from it.
I was tested and diagnosed with OSA after my wife saw mw stop breathing for more than 30 seconds one night. It turned out I have severe sleep apnea averaging over 90 inteuptions per hour anywhere from 10 seconds to over a minute. I never got passed stage two sleep into stages 3 and 4 where your restorative sleep takes place and REM wasn’t even on the horizon. It was a split study so the first half of the night, I was tested without any assistance. The second half was with a CPAP controlled by the tech in the control room. When I woke up the next morning after getting just 3 1/2 hours of quality sleep, I was on cloud nine ready to do everything I could find time to do!
I’m actually going in for a test this evening to see if after 2 1/2 years there needs to be any adjustments in my pressure, I’ve begun snoring through the CAPA a little now and then. Tonight will be with CPAP all night as I have learned that I now don’t sleep without the CPAP. We had a power failure recently and I just couldn’t sleep well at all. I’ve come to love my CPAP and travel with it.
If CPAP will work for you, I would not even consider doing surgery.

Is sleep apnea permanent?

I was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea in October 2003. I have been using a CPAP machine ever since. I started out at an air pressure of 9, but over time ended up at a pressure of 14. Back in January of this year (2007), I began following a steady exercise program and lost fifteen pounds. My doctor had me re-evaluated through another sleep study, and my pressure was reduced to the original pressure of 9. I am sleeping better and feeling better. I view my sleep apnea as being a result of my overweight body, and because I was able to lower my pressure through exercise and weight loss, is it possible to “cure” my sleep apnea if I keep on exercising and losing weight?

Yes, I still have my tonsils. The doctor I see for my sleep apnea has not mentioned my tonsils as being part of the problem. He mostly centers on weight loss and is happy whenever I report any amount of loss. He’s very encouraging.

Sleep apnea is able to be cured with good health and strong lungs. When you exercise practice good breathing, deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Practice breathing right. Most people forget ‘how’ to breath even though most are born with the instinct of doing correctly, we simply uncorrected it. You’ll notice when a baby is breathing the stomach goes up and down. A child, young adult or adult who has forgotten how to breath correctly with breath with their full bodies, shoulders moving up and down. If you’re not sure how you breathe, lay down on the ground and place a book on your stomach to see if it moves when you breathe. Breathing correctly will help your lungs.

My daughter had sleep apnea, came of CPAP, had to wear an alarm for a while but with increasing good health was able to come off and it’s been gone for years now.

What causes snoring?

everytime i whould fall asleep my boyfriend whould wake me up and say im snoring. ive never snored before. whats causes it and how can i get rid of it?

If the airways in your nose and throat are narrowed during sleep, the air you inhale and exhale has to push its way through a smaller passage. This can create a “snoring” noise, mostly due to vibrations of loose tissue in the back of your throat.
Snorers often have too much throat and nasal tissue, or “floppy” tissue that is more prone to vibrate. The position of the tongue can also get in the way of smooth breathing, as can being overweight – extra fat tissue in the neck and throat can obstruct airways.
